Care For Engineering attended Vinitaly 2014 in Verona, where sustainability emerged as one of the key themes of the event.
We took part, as attendees, in the conference “Which Sustainability Should Be Certified?” held on Wednesday, 9 April. The discussions revealed a strong interest within the wine sector in measuring performance and certifying supply chain sustainability — a contrast to other agricultural sectors that have yet to fully grasp the potential benefits such approaches can offer.
The topic of sustainability was addressed in broad terms: from the challenges climate change poses to agricultural production, to social sustainability indicators, from life cycle assessment (LCA) and product carbon footprint, to EPD® certification.
The conference proved highly insightful, highlighting that much remains to be done in the wine sector. Our expertise in environmental sustainability and, in particular, LCA will be of great value to wine producers — both in supporting their participation in national initiatives such as the V.I.V.A. Project, and in developing proprietary corporate standards for sustainable production.
During the event, we also laid the groundwork for a pilot project by Care For Engineering to conduct a full LCA of the vine-to-wine supply chain for a Tuscan winery.
