Efficient Methanol from Pumped Heat and Calcium Looping

EMPHATICaL is a forward-looking 4.5-year project that tackles the decarbonization challenges of the metallurgical industry in line with the EU’s 2050 climate targets. The project focuses on converting captured CO/CO₂ from highly electrified metallurgical industry, namely electrical and submerged arc furnace processes (EAF & SAF), through the energy efficient integration of innovative oxy-blown calcium-looping capture technology, purification, and conversion into e-methanol, powered by green H₂, and other storable carbon products.

As part of the consortium, our role is to carry out the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of the entire process, evaluating multiple technological and operational scenarios. In addition to traditional LCA, we also conduct Social Life Cycle Assessment (S-LCA) to evaluate social impacts along the supply chain. Furthermore, we perform a prospective LCA to assess the long-term environmental performance of the technology in alignment with 2050 climate objectives.

To achieve the 2050 climate goals, the metallurgical industry must reduce its carbon dependence and tackle hard-to-abate emissions.

EMPHATICAL will deliver a cost-effective and sustainable solution, integrating renewable energy and circular processes to convert CO₂ into valuable products like e-methanol. This approach will support the industry’s transition to net-zero emissions and promote carbon circularity.
