BUTTERFLY Project Back on Track: Following the Suspension Period, Activities Successfully Restarted Across the Consortium
Following the conclusion of the suspension period, the BUTTERFLY Horizon Europe Project has officially resumed its activities and continues to make progress towards its ambitious objectives.
The project remains fully committed to delivering innovative solutions for the production of sustainable renewable fuels through advanced biomass conversion technologies. In particular, BUTTERFLY is pursuing the following key objectives:
🎯 Demonstration of three integrated value chains for the co-production of renewable Dimethyl Ether (rDME) and Synthetic Natural Gas (SNG), while promoting feedstock diversification;
🎯 De-risking of the innovative SEDMES technology and its integration with gasification and methanation processes up to TRL 7;
🎯 Improvement of renewable fuel production performance and reduction of overall production costs;
🎯 Development of renewable fuel solutions tailored to off-grid heating applications, waterborne and heavy-duty transport, and industrial heating sectors;
🎯 Reduction of CO₂ emissions and enhancement of the security and sustainability of renewable fuel supply chains.
The project has recently gained visibility through its participation in two important European events.
First, BUTTERFLY contributed to the Clustering Event on Advanced Biofuels organised by the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA), which brought together more than 30 Horizon Europe projects working on innovative renewable fuel solutions. The event provided an excellent opportunity to exchange experiences, identify synergies, and strengthen collaboration within the European biofuels community.
In addition, BUTTERFLY will be showcased at the 34th edition of the European Biomass Conference and Exhibition (EUBCE 2026), one of the most important international events dedicated to biomass, bioenergy, and renewable fuels.
These activities confirm the project’s renewed momentum and its active role in supporting Europe’s transition towards a more sustainable, secure, and low-carbon energy future.
