Biomass Utilized To The Extended portfolio of Renewable Fuels with Large Yields

BUTTERFLY is an Innovation Action funded under Horizon Europe, focused on the co-production of renewable and recycled carbon-based fuels, specifically DiMethyl Ether (rDME) and Synthetic Natural Gas (SNG).

The project aims to create a flexible and innovative conversion process starting from waste and residual feedstocks, with key applications in off-grid energy systems, the steel sector, and heavy-duty transport (e.g. shipping).

BUTTERFLY will validate three complete value chains at TRL 7, each based on a different type of waste-derived input:

CFE is engaged in the assessment of raw material supply chains at the European regional scale (NUTS2), using the methodology developed and successfully applied in the CONVERGE project.

The supply chains of residual raw materials considered suitable for the BUTTERFLY conversion process will be identified, analyzed and evaluated in order to ensure a renewable, sustainable, consistent and regular supply.

Flexible and efficient co-production of clean fuels for hard-to-decarbonize sectors.

BUTTERFLY will demonstrate at pilot level a flexible, efficient and low-cost process to produce rDME and SNG from a wide range of feedstocks by combining indirect gasification with sorption-enhanced DME synthesis followed by methanation.
