Future Feedstock Flexible Carbon Upgrading to Bio Energy Dispatchable carriers

F-CUBED aims to develop an innovative concept of the advanced hydrothermal conversion process applied to different types of biogenic residues into intermediate bioenergy carriers with solid fuel characteristics suitable for balancing the electricity grid.

It will confirm experimentally the main process by applying continuous hydrothermal reactor and dewatering pilots in three industrial sites that process respectively paper sewage sludge, fruit and vegetable waste and virgin pomace from the olive oil production process.

CFE leads WP3 on waste olive pomace treatment and WP5 on value chain assessment. In WP3, CFE, together with APPO SCA, will coordinate the installation of a TORWASH® pilot plant at an oil mill in Cassano delle Murge (Puglia) to test the production of an improved bioenergy carrier from virgin pomace, demonstrating a circular process. In WP5, CFE will develop LCA models for value chains involving paper residues, agri-food waste, and olive pomace, using SimaPro and open-source tools. The analysis will follow ISO standards and the RED II directive, to assess environmental impact and support biofuel market approval.

The rapid exploitation of unused biogenic residues and wastes represents a challenge for the bioenergy sector.

The project aims to make better use of unused biogenic residues and waste by increasing their energy content and improving fuel quality. This will help lower processing costs and cut greenhouse gas emissions when these fuels are used for generating heat and power.
